The First Supper Symposium

Have women had the right to vote in Norway for a 100 years? Absolutely. But how are women's rights in the art world? This need some consideration. The First Supper Symposium invites you to an exhibition, a two-day seminar and a fantastic banquet. All events are open for everyone.

The First Supper Symposium is being organized in conjunction with the 100-year anniversary of women’s suffrage, which was signed into law in Norway on June 11th 1913. The purpose is to bring visual artists together to consider the importance of women’s suffrage and to discuss the history of feminist art creating spaces for female voices in the art world and discussing active solutions. Norway was the first sovereign country in the world that legislated common vote for all citizens and the fourth in total.

Judy Chicago will open an exhibition at Oslo Kunstforening Saturday 25th May. She will show early works from the time she struggled to find the imagery that connected her feelings as a woman to tell her story. The First Supper Symposium is inspired by Judy Chicagos masterpiece The Dinner Party which is on permanent display in Brooklyn Museum. Her piece marks the beginning ofa new awareness ofwomen's (missing) presence in the arts.

After the opening of Judy Chicagos show, The First Supper Symposium invites you to a marvelous banquet at the Kulturkirken Jakob, where there will be food, drinks, music by the DJ collective; Too Many Girls and there will also be some great surprises (!)

The following two days, 26 - 27th of May, there will be a seminar at Håndverkeren Kurs- og Konferansesenter, in the centre of Oslo. Here Judy Chicago, Dr. Elizabeth Sackler, Xavier Arakistain and Andrew Perchuk will give talks about their views and experience from their part of the world. Also Kate Pendry, Wenche Gulbransen, Lotte Konow Lund and FRANK will give talks about their experiences in the Norwegian art world.

We will also have amazing performances by both Ane Lan og Camille Norment.

There will also be an informal evening, The Soup Kitchen, at Kunstnernes Hus in the evening Sunday 26th.

You will find more information about the program, the speakers and the events on these pages.

Welcome!
